A hatchback looks simple from a distance, but its short body packs a lot of shape into a small space: a steep rear hatch, a roof spoiler, deep bumper recesses and tightly curved corners. Wrapping one well comes down to how those areas are handled.
This page is for owners of everyday and hot hatches who want a new colour, a contrast roof or a set of graphics without repainting. Every hatchback is wrapped at our workshop in Rivonia, Sandton.
About this service
A hatchback wrap uses thin, conformable vinyl film applied over the existing paint to change its colour, finish or look. On a hatchback, the rear of the car takes the most planning. The tailgate usually combines glass, a spoiler, a number plate recess, badges, a wiper and sometimes a camera, and each needs to be worked around, removed or trimmed neatly so the hatch still opens, closes and seals properly.
Roof spoilers are often clipped or bolted on and can be wrapped separately, wrapped in a contrast finish, or left in their original colour. Short front and rear overhangs mean bumpers wrap around sharply into the wheel arches, so film needs careful stretching and relief cuts in the right places. Door shuts and the inside edges of the hatch opening are only wrapped by arrangement, because they add significant time.
Vinyl changes the look of the car and gives some light protection against minor abrasion and UV. It is not paint protection film and is not designed to absorb stone chips. How it looks and how it eventually removes depend on your paint condition, the material chosen, installation and care.
Suitable vehicles and common uses
- Compact city hatchbacks used for daily commuting
- Hot hatches and performance hatchbacks with larger spoilers and vents
- Five-door and three-door body styles
- Owners wanting a contrast roof, spoiler or mirror caps
- Lease or resale-conscious owners who prefer not to repaint
- Small business hatchbacks carrying logos or contact details
Available options
- Full colour change in gloss, matte, satin, chrome or carbon fibre look, subject to material availability
- Contrast roof and roof spoiler wrap
- Spoiler, mirror cap and diffuser accents only
- Racing stripes or side graphics
- Chrome delete on badges and window trim
- Printed custom graphics designed for the hatch’s proportions
Options depend on the material available at the time of your project and on your vehicle. We confirm exactly what is possible in your quotation.
Why choose it
- Changes the colour or finish without a respray
- A small panel area helps keep material use down compared with larger vehicles
- Contrast roof and spoiler details suit the hatchback profile well
- Individual panels can be rewrapped if one is damaged later
- Original paint stays underneath if you later decide to remove the wrap
Things to consider
- Rear hatches with complex shapes may need seams or inlays around the spoiler and glass
- Deep bumper vents and grilles can limit how far film can be taken inside
- Existing chips, scratches or flaking clear coat will show through the film
- Resprayed panels may not bond or remove as predictably as factory paint
Preparation and installation process
- Inspection and finish choice. We look at the paint, the hatch and the spoiler with you and help you choose a finish and a coverage level.
- Deep clean and decontamination. The car is washed and panel surfaces cleaned so the film can bond properly, with extra attention around the hatch seals and bumper recesses.
- Removing fittings. Where practical, badges, lights, the spoiler or trim are removed so film can be tucked behind edges instead of cut around them.
- Panel-by-panel application. Film is applied, stretched and post-heated panel by panel, with the hatch and bumpers handled last.
- Reassembly and checks. Fittings are refitted and we check that the hatch, camera, wiper and sensors work and that edges are sealed.
What affects the price
- Full wrap, partial wrap or accents only
- The finish chosen; chrome and specialist films cost more and are harder to install
- Complexity of the rear hatch, spoiler and bumpers
- Whether door shuts or the inside of the hatch opening are included
- Paint condition and any preparation needed
- Design work for printed graphics
Every vehicle is different, so we quote each job individually. Your final quotation depends on the vehicle, the material, how much of the vehicle is covered, any artwork, and the condition of the paint once we have assessed it.
Turnaround
Timing depends on whether you choose a full or partial wrap, the finish, how much needs to be removed from the hatch and bumpers, and the paint condition we find on inspection. We confirm timing with your quote once we have assessed the car.
Care and maintenance
- Hand wash with a pH-neutral car shampoo and avoid brushes at automatic car washes
- Keep a pressure washer nozzle well away from the hatch edges and spoiler joins
- Do not use the wiper on a dry rear window repeatedly, as it can catch film edges near the glass
- Clean off bird droppings and tree sap promptly
- Park in shade or under cover where possible to reduce sun exposure
- Ask us before using polishes or waxes, especially on matte and satin films
Frequently asked questions
Can you wrap just the roof and spoiler on my hatchback?
Yes. A contrast roof with a matching spoiler is a common partial option on hatchbacks. We check how the spoiler is fitted and whether it is better wrapped on or off the car before quoting.
Will the rear camera and wiper still work after wrapping?
They should, because we work around or remove them and refit them afterwards. We check them before you collect the car.
Is there a seam on the rear hatch?
It depends on the shape of your hatch and the film. Some hatches can be wrapped in one piece; others need an inlay around the spoiler or recess. We will tell you where any seam is likely to sit before we start.
Do I need to tell anyone if I change my hatchbacku2019s colour?
A full colour change may need to be reported so your registration details stay correct, so check with your licensing authority. You should also tell your insurer about the wrap.
