Racing stripes are parallel bands of vinyl that run along the length of the vehicle, usually from the front bumper over the bonnet, roof and boot to the rear bumper. Twin stripes with a gap between them are the classic layout, but single, offset and bonnet-only stripes are also popular.
They suit sports and muscle-style cars, hot hatches and anyone who wants a bold, motorsport-inspired look without a full wrap.
About this service
Alignment is everything with racing stripes. The stripes cross several panels and gaps, so they have to line up perfectly from the bumper to the boot when viewed from the front or rear. We measure from the vehicle’s centre line rather than from badges or panel edges, which are not always symmetrical, and we check alignment across each panel gap before the film is finally fixed.
The stripes are cut at panel gaps, so the bonnet and boot can open freely, and the ends are wrapped around panel edges where possible. Your choice of finish changes the effect: gloss stripes stand out on a matte or satin car, while matte stripes on a gloss car give a more subtle contrast. Thin pinstripe borders in a second colour can frame the main stripes.
Stripes are vinyl, not paint, so the edges are visible on close inspection and existing chips or scratches under the stripe will show. The paint either side of the stripes continues to age naturally, so a stripe removed later may reveal a slightly different shade underneath.

- Hot hatches and coupés
- Classic and retro-styled vehicles
- Bakkies and SUVs wanting a bold bonnet-to-tailgate stripe
- Track day and show cars
- Vehicles with a contrast roof that the stripe can blend into
Available options

- Bonnet-only, bonnet and roof, or full over-the-top length
- Gloss, satin or matte stripes, subject to material availability
- Carbon fibre look stripes, subject to material availability
- Pinstripe borders in a contrast colour
- Custom widths and gap spacing to suit your vehicle’s proportions
Options depend on the material available at the time of your project and on your vehicle. We confirm exactly what is possible in your quotation.
Why choose it
- Strong visual impact with far less film than a full wrap
- Widths and spacing can be tailored to your vehicle
- No permanent change to the paint, depending on its condition
- Easy to combine with side stripes or a contrast roof
- Can be replaced with a new colour later
Things to consider
- Stripe edges are visible close up, unlike painted stripes
- Stripes are cut at every panel gap, so there are small breaks
- Chips and scratches under the stripe will show
- Paint around the stripes ages differently from the paint underneath
- Vents, washer jets and roof aerials affect where stripes can run
Preparation and installation process
- Layout design. We agree width, gap, length, finish and any pinstripe borders, and check how vents, jets and the aerial affect the line.
- Measure and mark. The vehicle’s centre line is measured and marked so stripes are positioned from a true reference, not from badges.
- Prepare. Each panel in the stripe’s path is cleaned and degreased.
- Lay and align. Stripes are laid panel by panel and alignment is checked across each gap from front and rear before fixing.
- Cut and finish. Stripes are cut at panel gaps, ends are wrapped around edges, and pinstripes are added if chosen.
What affects the price
- Stripe length, from bonnet-only to full over-the-top
- Number of stripes and pinstripe borders
- Film choice and finish
- Obstacles such as vents, scoops, aerials and spoilers
- Design time for custom widths or shapes
- Paint preparation needed beforehand
Every vehicle is different, so we quote each job individually. Your final quotation depends on the vehicle, the material, how much of the vehicle is covered, any artwork, and the condition of the paint once we have assessed it.
Turnaround
Timing depends on the stripe length, number of stripes and borders, how many obstacles the stripes cross and any paint preparation needed. Precise alignment takes time and is not rushed. We confirm timing with your quote.
Care and maintenance
- Wash in the direction of the stripe rather than across its edges
- Avoid pressure washing straight at stripe ends near panel gaps
- Remove insects and droppings from the bonnet stripe promptly
- Do not wax over stripe edges with abrasive products
- Have lifted ends at panel gaps reviewed early
Frequently asked questions
How do you make sure the stripes are straight?
We measure from the vehicleu2019s centre line rather than from badges or grilles, which are not always perfectly central. Alignment is checked across each panel gap from the front and the rear before the film is fixed.
Should I choose gloss or matte stripes?
It depends on the body finish. Contrasting finishes, such as gloss stripes on a satin car, tend to look sharper, while matching finishes are more subtle. We can show samples against your paint.
What are pinstripe borders?
They are thin lines in a second colour running along the edges of the main stripes. They frame the stripes and are popular on retro-styled and classic vehicles.
Can stripes go over my spoiler?
Often, yes, but spoilers have tight curves and sometimes a brake light. We decide whether to continue the stripe over the spoiler or stop it neatly before.
