Chrome Delete and Trim Wraps

Chrome window surrounds, grille trims and badges covered in black or colour vinyl for a cleaner, darker look.

Chrome delete replaces the look of chrome trim with vinyl, usually gloss, satin or matte black. Window surrounds, grille surrounds, door handles, roof rails and badges are the common areas.

It suits owners who find factory chrome dated, people building a blacked-out theme, and vehicles where chrome trim has started to pit or fade.

About this service

Window surrounds are the most popular chrome delete. They are narrow, long and often run into the door seals, so the film has to be trimmed precisely and tucked under rubber where possible. On some vehicles, trims have to be removed to get a clean edge, and we will tell you before starting if that is the case and whether clips may need replacing.

Chrome-plated plastic is very smooth, and film does not always grip it as readily as paint. Edge preparation and careful finishing matter more than on a painted panel, and very tight returns are the first places to lift. Pitted, flaking or peeling chrome will show through the film and can also undermine adhesion, so the condition of the trim affects what we can achieve.

Grilles vary a lot. Simple chrome surrounds wrap well, while honeycomb or mesh grilles with many small openings are often not practical to wrap neatly. Badges can be wrapped, removed for a de-badged look, or left in place. We check every piece before quoting and will say if a part is better left alone.

Suitable vehicles and common uses

  • Sedans and SUVs with chrome window surrounds
  • Vehicles with chrome grille surrounds or bars
  • Bakkies with chrome handles, mirrors or bumper inserts
  • Luxury vehicles where chrome trim has begun to pit
  • Owners wanting a blacked-out look with a contrast roof
  • Vehicles with chrome badges, scripts and roof rails

Available options

  • Gloss black for a factory-style finish
  • Satin or matte black for a low-sheen look
  • Carbon fibre look or body colour, subject to material availability
  • Window surrounds only, or a full trim package
  • Grille surround and bars where the design allows
  • Badges wrapped, removed or left as they are

Options depend on the material available at the time of your project and on your vehicle. We confirm exactly what is possible in your quotation.

Why choose it

  • Changes the vehicle’s character without replacing trim parts
  • Covers faded or lightly marked chrome visually
  • Can be removed later to return to the original chrome, depending on trim condition
  • Pairs naturally with a black roof, mirrors and tinted rear windows
  • Can be done in stages, starting with window surrounds

Things to consider

  • Some trims need removal, and old clips can break and need replacement
  • Chrome-plated plastic gives weaker adhesion than paint, especially on tight edges
  • Pitted, flaking or peeling chrome shows through and may lift
  • Intricate mesh or honeycomb grilles are often not practical to wrap
  • Pinned badges cannot be removed without leaving holes

Preparation and installation process

  1. Trim survey. We go over every chrome piece, check its condition and how it is fixed, and agree which parts are included.
  2. Removal plan. Where trims must come off, we explain the risk to clips and seals and agree how to proceed.
  3. Clean and prepare. Each trim is degreased thoroughly, including the edges, as chrome needs careful preparation for good adhesion.
  4. Wrap. Film is applied in narrow sections, trimmed precisely and tucked under seals or behind trims where possible.
  5. Refit and inspect. Removed trims are refitted, badges are reinstated or left off as agreed, and every edge is checked.

What affects the price

  • Number and length of chrome pieces included
  • Whether trims or grilles have to be removed and refitted
  • Complexity of the grille design
  • Condition of the chrome, including pitting or peeling
  • Replacement clips if old ones break during removal
  • Film choice and finish

Every vehicle is different, so we quote each job individually. Your final quotation depends on the vehicle, the material, how much of the vehicle is covered, any artwork, and the condition of the paint once we have assessed it.

Turnaround

Timing depends on how many chrome pieces are included, whether trims and grilles need to come off, the condition of the chrome and whether replacement clips have to be sourced. We confirm timing with your quote after inspecting the vehicle.

Care and maintenance

  • Avoid scrubbing window surround edges with brushes
  • Keep pressure washers away from trim edges and seals
  • Be careful with ice scrapers or squeegees near window surrounds
  • Do not use chrome polish or metal cleaners on wrapped trim
  • Have lifting edges attended to early

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to remove my window trims?

Not always. Many window surrounds can be wrapped in place with the film tucked under the seals. Some designs need removal for a clean edge, and we will tell you before work starts.

Why do chrome delete edges sometimes lift?

Chrome-plated plastic is very smooth, so adhesion is weaker than on paint, and narrow trims have tight edges. Careful preparation and edge finishing reduce the risk, but chrome trim remains more demanding than a painted panel.

Can you wrap my grille?

Grille surrounds and simple bars usually wrap well. Honeycomb or mesh grilles with many small openings are often not practical to wrap neatly, and we will say so honestly.

Can I go back to chrome later?

Usually the film can be removed to reveal the original chrome. If the chrome was already peeling or pitted, removal can pull more of it away, so we check its condition beforehand.
