Matte vinyl has a flat, non-reflective surface. Instead of mirror-like highlights, the light is spread across the panel, which gives a bold, understated look. Matte black is the most familiar example, but matte films come in many colours.
Matte suits owners who want a strong visual change and are prepared to follow a specific cleaning routine. Matte paint is costly and difficult to maintain; a matte wrap gives a similar look over your existing paint.
About this service
Because matte film scatters light rather than reflecting it, it hides shallow ripples and minor waviness in panels better than gloss. It will not hide chips, deep scratches or dents, which still show as shapes in the surface, but small surface reflections are far less distracting.
The trade-off is how matte handles dirt and oils. Fingerprints, greasy marks, bird droppings and water spots can stand out against a flat finish and can leave shiny or darker patches if not cleaned correctly. Matte film cannot be polished, waxed or buffed; doing so creates glossy spots that cannot be reversed.
Scratches on matte film cannot be polished out the way they can on paint. If a panel is noticeably marked, the usual fix is to rewrap that panel. We discuss this so you can decide whether matte suits how and where you use your vehicle.
Suitable vehicles and common uses
- Full colour changes on sedans, coupés and sports cars
- Matte black SUVs and bakkies for a rugged, low-shine look
- Matte bonnets or roofs as a contrast panel
- Vehicles with slightly wavy panels where gloss reflections would be distracting
- Owners who hand wash and are happy to use matte-specific products
- Show or display vehicles where a flat finish suits the design
Available options
- Matte black and a range of matte colours, subject to material availability
- Full wrap or contrast panels such as bonnet, roof or mirrors
- Matte metallic films with a subtle flake under a flat surface, subject to availability
- Combination with gloss black trim or a chrome delete
- Door jambs and shuts on full wraps where practical
Options depend on the material available at the time of your project and on your vehicle. We confirm exactly what is possible in your quotation.
Why choose it
- A strong visual change that stands out from gloss-painted cars
- Hides minor panel waviness better than reflective finishes
- A matte look without the cost and difficulty of matte paint
- Panels can be rewrapped individually if damaged
- Can be removed later to return to the original colour
Things to consider
- Must never be polished, waxed or machine buffed
- Fingerprints, oils and water spots show more readily
- Scratches cannot be polished out; damaged panels usually need rewrapping
- Bird droppings and tree sap need prompt removal to avoid permanent marks
- Many automated car washes and some wash products are unsuitable
Preparation and installation process
- Lifestyle and care discussion. We talk through how you wash and park your vehicle, because matte demands a specific routine.
- Sample and paint check. You see matte samples against your car, and we assess the paint for chips or defects that would still show.
- Clean preparation. Panels are decontaminated and degreased; any oils left on the paint can affect adhesion and the finish.
- Careful handling and install. Matte film is handled with minimal squeegee friction where possible to avoid glossy burnishing marks.
- Finish check and handover. We inspect for shiny spots or marks and explain matte-specific aftercare in detail.
What affects the price
- Full wrap or contrast panels
- Vehicle size and complexity of curves
- Matte film range chosen
- Paint condition and any preparation
- Disassembly and reassembly needed
- Door shuts if included
Every vehicle is different, so we quote each job individually. Your final quotation depends on the vehicle, the material, how much of the vehicle is covered, any artwork, and the condition of the paint once we have assessed it.
Turnaround
Matte installation requires careful handling to avoid marking the surface, and timing depends on the coverage, the vehicle’s shape, the paint condition and the parts that need removing. We confirm the timing in your quote after assessing the vehicle.
Care and maintenance
- Use pH-neutral shampoos and cleaners made for matte finishes
- Never wax, polish, glaze or use gloss-enhancing products
- Blot rather than rub when removing marks, using a clean microfibre cloth
- Remove bird droppings, insects and sap as soon as possible
- Avoid automated washes with brushes and spray-wax cycles
- Dry gently to prevent water spots, especially in the sun
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a matte-wrapped car through a car wash?
We advise against automated washes with brushes or wax cycles, as they can scratch or add shine to matte film. A careful hand wash with matte-safe products is the safer option.
What happens if I wax a matte wrap by accident?
Wax can leave glossy or blotchy patches. A matte-specific cleaner may reduce it if acted on quickly, but in some cases the panel will need rewrapping.
Does matte black get hot in the sun?
Like any dark colour, matte black absorbs more heat than light colours. Parking in shade helps both the film and the cabin.
Will matte hide dents?
Matte makes shallow ripples less noticeable because it does not reflect sharp lines. Actual dents, chips and deep scratches will still show through and should ideally be repaired before wrapping.
