SUV Wraps

Wraps for SUVs and crossovers, accounting for large panels, tall roofs, roof rails and textured plastic cladding.

SUVs and crossovers carry more surface area than most cars, sit higher off the ground and often mix painted panels with unpainted plastic cladding, roof rails and chunky bumpers. A good SUV wrap plans for all of that before any film is cut.

This page is for owners of compact crossovers through to large seven-seat SUVs who want a new colour or finish, a blacked-out look, or selected accents. SUVs are wrapped at our Rivonia workshop in Sandton.

About this service

An SUV wrap uses the same conformable vinyl as a car wrap, but in larger quantities and with more attention to access. Tall roofs need to be reached safely and evenly, and the large doors and tailgate mean longer runs of film. Roof rails are either removed, masked or worked around, depending on how they are fitted.

Plastic wheel arch extensions and sill cladding are often textured and unpainted. Vinyl does not bond reliably to rough, textured plastic, so these parts are usually left as they are or, if smooth enough, wrapped separately. Many SUV owners choose to keep the cladding black as a contrast. Tailgates with integrated spoilers, cameras, sensors and powered opening also need care so nothing is obstructed.

Vinyl gives some light protection against minor abrasion and UV but is not built to absorb stone chips or gravel strikes; paint protection film is the product for that. Results depend on your paint condition, the film chosen, installation and care.

Suitable vehicles and common uses

  • Compact crossovers used for city driving
  • Mid-size and large family SUVs
  • Seven-seat SUVs with long side panels
  • Luxury and performance SUVs
  • SUVs with roof rails or roof racks
  • Owners wanting a blacked-out roof, pillars and trim

Available options

  • Full colour change in gloss, matte or satin, subject to material availability
  • Contrast roof and pillars, with roof rails wrapped or left as they are
  • Chrome delete on window trim, roof rails and grille surrounds
  • Bonnet or tailgate accents
  • Side graphics or stripes sized for the longer body
  • Combination of colour-change wrap with paint protection film on the front end

Options depend on the material available at the time of your project and on your vehicle. We confirm exactly what is possible in your quotation.

Why choose it

  • Large panels give a dramatic change of colour or finish
  • A blacked-out roof and trim suits most SUV shapes
  • Contrast against black cladding can look deliberate rather than mismatched
  • Panels can be rewrapped individually after minor damage
  • Original paint remains underneath

Things to consider

  • Textured plastic cladding generally cannot be wrapped reliably
  • Larger surface area means more material and installation time than a hatchback or sedan
  • Roof rails that cannot be removed may need careful trimming around their bases
  • Vinyl is not designed to protect against gravel and stone chips on dirt roads

Preparation and installation process

  1. Walk-around assessment. We check paint condition, identify which trim and cladding can or cannot be wrapped and agree coverage with you.
  2. Cleaning and preparation. The SUV is washed, decontaminated and cleaned, including the roof and around rail mounting points.
  3. Removal of fittings. Where practical, roof rails, badges, lights and tailgate trim are removed to allow film to wrap behind edges.
  4. Roof and large panels. The roof is wrapped from safe working height first, followed by doors, wings, bonnet and tailgate.
  5. Refit and function check. Fittings and rails are refitted, and we check sensors, cameras and the tailgate before handover.

What affects the price

  • Size of the SUV and total panel area
  • Finish and film type
  • Whether roof rails can be removed or must be worked around
  • Complexity of bumpers, tailgate and spoiler
  • Whether door shuts are included
  • Paint condition and preparation required

Every vehicle is different, so we quote each job individually. Your final quotation depends on the vehicle, the material, how much of the vehicle is covered, any artwork, and the condition of the paint once we have assessed it.

Turnaround

Timing for an SUV depends on its size, how much trim and how many roof rails need to come off, the finish chosen, and any paint preparation found during inspection. We confirm timing with your quote after the vehicle has been assessed.

Care and maintenance

  • Use a step or ladder carefully when washing the roof so you do not lean on wrapped edges
  • Rinse off mud and road grime after gravel or dirt road trips rather than letting it dry on
  • Avoid automatic brush washes
  • Keep pressure washer jets away from edges at the cladding and roof rail bases
  • Do not load roof boxes or racks in a way that rubs against wrapped panels
  • Ask us before using any polish or protective coating on the film

Frequently asked questions

Can you wrap the black plastic cladding on my SUV?

Textured, unpainted plastic does not hold vinyl reliably, so we usually leave it as it is. Smooth plastic parts can sometimes be wrapped; we will tell you which parts on your vehicle are suitable.

Do the roof rails have to come off?

Removing them gives the cleanest finish, but it depends on how they are fitted. Where removal is not practical, film is trimmed neatly around their bases.

Will a wrap protect my SUV on gravel roads?

Vinyl gives only light protection against minor abrasion. For stone chip resistance on the front end, ask about paint protection film, which is a different product.

Can I keep the factory colour and just black out the roof?

Yes. A contrast roof, often with blacked-out pillars and roof rails, is a popular partial option for SUVs.
