Do you remove parts when applying PPF to a McLaren?

Only where it can be done safely and helps the film wrap edges cleanly, such as some badges or trims. We explain what we plan to remove before starting, and where removal isnu2019t appropriate we trim the film in place.

Can PPF go over exposed carbon fibre?

Clear film can often be applied to exposed carbon fibre parts where the surface is suitable. It is designed to reduce chips while letting the weave show through. We assess each part individually.

Will film affect the active rear wing?

No. Moving aero parts are planned so they can move freely, and film edges are kept clear of gaps and hinges. We test the wingu2019s movement before handover.

McLaren PPF & Wraps in Rivonia, Sandton

McLaren supercars such as the 720S, 750S and Artura, and the more touring-focused GT, are designed around airflow. Their channels, intakes and sculpted surfaces look striking, but they also make protection and wrapping more demanding. Most McLaren owners who visit our Rivonia workshop in Sandton ask about full paint protection film, with some wanting a colour change or accents.

Car Colour Wraps is an independent workshop and is not affiliated with or approved by McLaren Automotive. We use 3M and Avery Dennison vinyl films for colour change wraps, and clear paint protection film for stone-chip protection.

Supercar aero and complex shapes

On the 720S and 750S, air channels run through the dihedral doors and around the rear, and the active rear wing moves at speed. The Artura has tightly sculpted intakes and a low nose, while the GT is smoother but carries a large rear glass hatch. Every channel, vent edge and lip needs careful film planning, with seams placed where they are least visible. The active wing and any moving aero parts are wrapped or protected only where they can move freely.

Full PPF on a McLaren

With a low front end and wide rear arches, a McLaren takes stone chips from the road and from its own tyres. Full-vehicle paint protection film covers every painted panel with a thick, clear urethane film designed to absorb chips and light scuffs, without changing the colour. Exposed carbon fibre parts can also be covered with clear film where suitable. Results depend on the condition of the paint, so we inspect it first.

Careful disassembly

To wrap edges cleanly, some parts such as badges, number plate mounts or certain trims may be removed, but only where this can be done without damage, and we discuss it with you first. Where removal isn’t appropriate, film is trimmed in place. Clips, fasteners and delicate carbon parts are handled carefully and refitted, and we test doors, aero and lights before handover.

Colour change and paperwork

Satin and gloss colour changes, contrast roofs and accent stripes are all possible, subject to material availability. Vinyl offers only light protection against minor abrasion, so some owners combine a colour change with PPF on the most exposed areas.

Tell your insurer about any wrap, and check with your licensing authority whether a full colour change needs to be recorded. Our 5-year workmanship guarantee covers our installation workmanship only, not the lifespan of the film or colour.
