Sandblast & Frosted Window Film

Frosted, etched-glass-look vinyl for privacy bands, cut-out logos and glass-door manifestation in offices, banks and shops.

Frosted window film is a translucent vinyl that gives clear glass the look of sandblasted or acid-etched glass. It softens the view through the glass while still letting light in, and it can be cut into bands, patterns, logos and lettering.

It suits offices, boardrooms and meeting rooms, banks and financial branches, medical rooms, shopfronts and any glass partition or door where you want privacy, branding or better visibility of the glass. Film is installed on your premises, with access and after-hours work arranged per project.

About this service

Real sandblasting permanently roughens the glass. Frosted film achieves a similar look but sits on the surface, so it can usually be removed later, which matters for tenants who must return a unit in its original condition or who expect to rebrand. It also allows designs that are hard to sandblast, such as fine logo cut-outs or graduated patterns, and damaged sections can be replaced without replacing the glass.

Common uses include privacy bands across boardroom and office partitions at seated or standing eye level, full frosting on bathroom or consulting-room glass, logos cut out of frosting so the clear glass forms the logo, and frosted logos on clear glass. Manifestation strips or dots on glass doors and full-height glazing make the glass visible so people do not walk into it. Your architect or health and safety representative should confirm the required positions and contrast under the applicable SANS standards and building regulations; we apply to the agreed layout.

Film is applied to clean, smooth glass, usually on the inside face. Some glass types need care. Textured, patterned and some coated glass may not bond well, and certain films on large or partly shaded glass can increase heat absorption. We check the glass type and advise where a thermal-stress check with the glass or film supplier is sensible. Frosted films are available from manufacturers such as 3M and Avery Dennison, subject to material availability, in several translucency levels and some tinted or textured variants.

Suitable vehicles and common uses

  • Boardrooms and meeting rooms with glass walls
  • Open-plan offices with glass partitions and private offices
  • Bank and financial-services branches needing privacy at consulting desks
  • Medical, dental and therapy rooms with glazed doors or windows
  • Shopfronts wanting a branded band or logo without blocking light
  • Bathrooms and changing areas with clear glass
  • Reception areas where glass doors need visible manifestation

Available options

  • Full frosting for maximum privacy on a pane or door
  • Privacy bands at a set height, with straight, stepped or patterned edges
  • Logos and lettering cut out of the frosting so the clear glass shows the design
  • Frosted logos, lettering or patterns applied to clear glass
  • Manifestation strips, dots or branded bands on glass doors and full-height glazing
  • Graduated or dot-pattern frosting that fades from opaque to clear
  • Tinted or coloured frosted films, subject to material availability
  • Removal of old frosted film and adhesive before new film is applied

Options depend on the material available at the time of your project and on your vehicle. We confirm exactly what is possible in your quotation.

Why choose it

  • Privacy without losing natural light
  • A sandblasted look that can usually be removed when the lease ends or the brand changes
  • Fine logo and pattern detail that is difficult or costly to achieve by sandblasting
  • Damaged sections can be replaced without replacing the glass
  • Manifestation makes glass doors and partitions easier to see

Things to consider

  • Frosted film reduces the view through the glass but does not make it fully opaque at night when the room is lit
  • Textured, patterned and some coated glass may not be suitable
  • Some glass types and positions need a thermal-stress check before film is applied
  • Film can be scratched by sharp objects, rings or abrasive cleaning
  • Removal after many years can take longer and may leave adhesive that needs cleaning

Preparation and installation process

  1. Site measure and glass check. We measure each pane and door, note the glass type, any coatings and which face the film will go on, and flag panes that may need a thermal-stress check.
  2. Layout and design. Band heights, logo positions and manifestation positions are drawn on elevations of your glazing, with cut-out logos prepared from your brand files.
  3. Approval. You approve the layout and, where needed, your landlord, architect or safety representative confirms the design and manifestation positions.
  4. Cutting and preparation. Film is plotter-cut to size and weeded so the logos and patterns are ready to transfer.
  5. Cleaning and installation. Glass is cleaned thoroughly, and film is applied and squeegeed out, often after hours so offices and shops keep working.
  6. Final check. Edges, alignment and band heights are checked across adjacent panes, and you receive cleaning advice for the film.

What affects the price

  • Total glass area and the number of panes and doors
  • Plain frosting compared with cut-out logos, lettering or patterns
  • Film type, such as standard, tinted or graduated frosting
  • Removal of old film and adhesive
  • Height and access, including ladders or access equipment
  • After-hours installation

Every vehicle is different, so we quote each job individually. Your final quotation depends on the vehicle, the material, how much of the vehicle is covered, any artwork, and the condition of the paint once we have assessed it.

Turnaround

Timing depends on the glass area and complexity of the cut design, layout approval by you and any landlord or architect, material availability for the chosen film, removal of old film, and access to the building, especially if work must be done after hours. Timing is confirmed with the quote after the glass has been measured.

Care and maintenance

  • Wait for the film to cure as advised before cleaning it
  • Clean with a soft cloth or rubber squeegee and mild soapy water or a non-ammonia glass cleaner
  • Never use scrapers, razor blades or abrasive pads on frosted film
  • Ask office cleaning staff not to spray solvent cleaners on the film
  • Report lifting edges promptly before dirt collects under them

Frequently asked questions

Is frosted film the same as sandblasting?

No. Sandblasting permanently roughens the glass, while frosted film is a vinyl applied to the surface that gives a similar look. Film can usually be removed or replaced later, which sandblasted glass cannot.

Can people see through frosted film?

It blurs the view to shapes and light, which is enough for most privacy needs in daytime. At night, if the room is lit and outside is dark, outlines can be more visible, so consider full frosting or blinds where complete privacy matters.

Do our glass doors need manifestation?

Glass doors and full-height glazing in many buildings need markings so people can see the glass. Your architect or safety representative should confirm the requirements under the applicable SANS standards and building regulations, and we apply to the agreed positions.

Will the film damage our glass when it is removed?

Removal from sound glass usually leaves the glass intact, though older film may leave adhesive that needs cleaning. The 5-year workmanship guarantee covers installation workmanship only, not the film itself or wear.

Can you cut our logo out of the frosting?

Yes. The logo is cut from the frosted film so the clear glass forms the design, or the logo itself can be frosted on clear glass. Very fine detail may need to be simplified slightly so it cuts and applies cleanly.
